Criticism On “Finding Science in Acupuncture”
Well my neophyte, let me fill you in on how the Chinese view their own medical tradition when they became aware of Western medicine:
When the People’s Republic of China was formed in the early 1900s they moved to implement Western medicine which they found so superior to traditional Chinese medicine that they abolished the practise of their traditional medicine. When the Communists took over they encouraged a return to traditional medicine primarily because it was cheap. Even then medical costs were a big budget item. During the Cultural Revolution the Communists began to associate traditional Chinese medicine with revisionism as well as not being particularly effective health and medicine so they too again purged, like the earlier Nationalists, the practise of traditional medicine but adding their usual touch to things they disapproved of by killing off many of the traditional practioners. It has only been about 30 years since traditional medicine has made a come back in China for much of the same old reasons…it’s cheap.
